Casalta, which embodies the pleasure of slipping into village life, while still enjoying the comforts of modern living, sits on a hill above an agricultural plain overseen by the silhouette of Siena, and bathed by the Rivers Merse. Positioned where the wild Maremma meets the cultured Montagnola countryside of western Tuscany, Orgia once depended on the woods that surrounded it and the livelihood of its residents relied on their skill in working with this natural resource. Some of this understanding still remains - residents know which mushrooms not to pick but where to find the best Porcini, how to grind flour from abundant chestnuts and where to find the deepest pools in the river that runs at the base of the woods. While the present population is only in double digits, happily, there is a small grocery and a fine restaurant that people drive far to visit....
Though the property is accessed directly from a narrow outer lane in the small hamlet, its stone and jasmine draped walls ensure its privacy while making it difficult to appreciate just how large the house is. Built around an inner courtyard, with garden areas on both sides, one portion of the house is three-storey, the other a single storey. Part of the beauty of this property is in the owner's attention to detail and this is seen throughout - from the beautiful linens and fine artwork to the nurturing of a skilled gardener to the forethought as to what would make a Tuscan visit a truly memorable occasion, be it a catered meal, someone else to do the driving or a tip about sites off the beaten path.
Two wooden gate entrances from the road lead into the beautifully tended gardens whose flagstone path leads to a large patio between the main house and low brick structure containing the laundry room. From the patio an arched glass entrance leads into a furnished entrance hall that has doors into the central courtyard. To one side of the hall there is a passageway off of which a terracotta-laid staircase winds up to the first floor. This level, which is also reached via an external stairway from the central court, provides a sitting room with comfortable seating in front of a traditional Tuscan fireplace. Bedroom accommodations are on the second floor, where there are three double bedrooms, one with an ensuite shower room and two with ensuite bathrooms, one of which has a charming claw-footed tub with a country view. Though the bedrooms vary somewhat in size, they are all air-conditioned and beautifully furnished with country antiques and fine fabrics.
On the ground floor doors from the entry hall lead to a single bedroom with an ensuite shower room. A short hallway connects this bedroom to a large sitting room, with corner fireplace, three small sofas, armchairs and doors to the inner court. Both the sitting room and kitchen beyond have access into a beautiful dining room with round table that can seat 12 and doors to both the inner court and the side garden topped with a small covered terrace. The kitchen is a generous galley style, with appliances to one side and a stainless steel counter with steel and leather stools on the other. A stone walkway accessed from both the kitchen and dining room lead down to the outdoor living and dining areas whose panoramas take in wide valley farmlands and the medieval city of Siena resting on the horizon. From the covered terrace a stone path leads past rose-trellised walls and a floral garden to a very large sun-drenched brick terrace furnished for outdoor living.
