Lucumone is a very livable and elegant stone house for 9, set on two stories with an infinity edge pool in a stepped garden, looking out over the Tuscan landscape.
The decor is cool and contemporary, the feel is chic and relaxed.
The house is set in classic Chianti, with vineyards and dark green forests everywhere you look, and plenty of excellent wineries nearby.
Facing the tree-shaded garden at the side of the house double doors open to an internal stone stairway to the upper apartment. To the left of the landing is a charming twin/double bedroom with a bright ensuite bathroom.
A second door on the landing opens to a stylish kitchen that incorporates a generous dining area with a marble-topped table for 8. Light floods the kitchen through remote-controlled skylights and modern appliances and stainless counters find an easy harmony with a wood-burning oven - all in all, an ideal place to cook together or learn a few Tuscan tricks from a local chef. A door off the dining area leads into a large sitting room looking out onto wooded Chianti hillsides and furnished with four comfortable sofas, armchairs, and a fireplace that will add warmth to any early Spring or late Autumn visit.
A second door off the dining area leads to a short corridor off of which are a spacious double bedroom, a twin/double bedroom and a large bathroom shared by both bedrooms with both tub and shower. All rooms on this floor are under soaring beamed ceilings and include good quality soft furnishings whose light tones add to the sense of space; both bathrooms are fitted with good lighting and parquet flooring and dressed in travertine.
While there is not an internal staircase to the lower apartment, a narrow door at the bottom of the entry stairs does access an open stone loggia with wide arched entrances on the ground floor whose flagstone pavement leads to a long wooden dining table for meals al fresco. Stone steps nearby lead directly up into a sitting room with sofas, a dining table for 4 and wall shelving that includes a flat screen TV used only for DVD viewing.
To one side of the sitting room is a spacious kitchen, convenient for meals under the loggia, whose travertine counters cover ample storage space as well as the property washing machine. To the other side of the living room a hallway leads to a single bedroom with an ensuite shower room, a sofa-bed and independent access to the side garden. Also from the hallway are doors to a shower room with large walk-in shower and the adjacent double bedroom whose windows facing the beautiful views seen from the back terrace.
For those drawn to this area for its famous wines, tasting at the nearest winery, Castello d'Albola, is but a walkable kilometre away, whereas a five-minute drive through vine-strewn hills brings you to the restaurants, shops, and community buzz of ancient Radda in Chianti. Several times a year Radda celebrates the bounty of ruby red grapes, as do the other picturesque villages of the Chianti hills less than half an hour away - Gaiole, Greve, Panzano and Castellina - though weekly markets, summer concerts, artisan fairs and races over winding panoramic roads are also reasons to gather.
Lucumone is well placed to explore the historic centres that inspire guidebooks; whether it is medieval Siena with its famed shell-shaped piazza, the Renaissance jewel-box that is Florence, San Gimignano and its ancient towers or the Saracen jousts and antiquarian markets of Arezzo, all are easy day trips. Know, however, that there may be days when the sparkle on your pool and the quiet found on your wooded hillside are all you will need for the day to be a good one.
