Around Villa Feronia

Lake Trasimeno is Italy's fourth-largest lake (128 square kilometers) and unusually shallow - just 6 meters at its deepest point. This means the water warms quickly in summer, making it ideal for swimming. The lake has no outflows, so its level depends entirely on rainfall and local springs, which gives it a character quite different from the northern Italian lakes fed by Alpine rivers. The water is calm, the beaches gently shelving, and the surrounding hills covered in olive groves and vineyards.

Passignano sul Trasimeno is your nearest little town, a fortified fishing village dominated by its 14th-century Rocca, which now houses the Boat Museum. The medieval center invites strolls through cobbled alleys, and the lakefront is perfect for sunset walks. This is the main ferry hub for Isola Maggiore. From here, ferries depart for Isola Maggiore (10 minutes - the shortest crossing) and occasionally for Isola Polvese.

Isola Maggiore is the only inhabited island on Lake Trasimeno (about 30 residents) and the most magical. The 10-minute ferry from Tuoro lands you in a medieval fishing village where time seems to have stopped in the 15th century. Narrow stone streets wind between sandstone houses. Visit the Church of San Salvatore (14th-century frescoes, painting by Sano di Pietro), the Gothic Church of San Michele Arcangelo, and the Lace Museum showcasing traditional Irish-point lace-making brought to the island in the late 1800s. St. Francis of Assisi spent time here in solitary meditation in 1211 - you can visit the chapel that preserves the bed on which he slept. The entire island perimeter is just 2km, perfect for a gentle wander. Return ferry €6 + €2 landing fee.

Isola Polvese, the largest island (70 hectares), is now a scientific-educational park managed by the Province of Perugia. It's uninhabited and offers pristine nature walks through olive groves and holm oak forests. Key sights include the 14th-century fortress ruins (now an outdoor theatre), the Church of San Giuliano (built on Roman villa remains), the Garden of Aquatic Plants designed by landscape architect Pietro Porcinai in 1959, and the ruins of the Monastero di San Secondo (inhabited by Olivetan monks 1404-1624). There's a small beach with playground and volleyball courts - ideal if you have children. Ferry from San Feliciano (10-15 minutes), less frequently from Passignano.

Isola Minore, the smallest island, is privately owned and uninhabited - you can only view it from the ferry.

Castiglione del Lago (west shore) is the largest town on the lake, with a medieval castle offering spectacular views. The town juts out into the lake on a limestone promontory. Good restaurants and shops.

San Feliciano (east shore) is a quiet fishing village known for sunset views over the water. This is the main departure point for ferries to Isola Polvese.

Cortona (20-25 mins by car) is the hilltop Tuscan town made famous by "Under the Tuscan Sun." The medieval streets, Etruscan walls, and views across the Val di Chiana to Lake Trasimeno make it one of Tuscany's most beautiful towns. The Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca has important Etruscan artifacts.

Perugia (25-30 mins) is Umbria's capital, a university city with a medieval center perched on a hilltop. The Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria houses masterpieces by Perugino and Pinturicchio. Don't miss the Rocca Paolina fortress and the escalators that tunnel through the old city.

Assisi (45 mins) is St. Francis's hometown, dominated by the Basilica di San Francesco with Giotto frescoes. The pink stone medieval center is remarkably beautiful.

Cycling and walking: The 57km cycle path around Lake Trasimeno is mostly flat (42% asphalt, 58% gravel), passing through ancient villages with constant lake views. From Tuoro, an 11km loop leads to Monte Gualandro summit for panoramic views of the islands. The area is crisscrossed with hiking trails. I've cycled this trail and it's a real pleasure.

Swimming and beaches: Tuoro has beaches and a lido with sunbeds and bars. The water is calm and shallow near shore, warming quickly in summer. Various beaches around the lake offer different atmospheres - ask your owners for current recommendations.

Birdwatching: Lake Trasimeno's shallow wetland ecosystem supports rich biodiversity. The Oasi La Valle in San Savino (Magione municipality) is a vital wetland and birdwatcher's paradise. Crested grebes, herons, and numerous water birds nest here.
