Constructed in the 18th century in the town of Fabbrica by one of the noble families associated with the grand Duchy of Tuscany, Villa Glicine has undergone a meticulous restoration process that has preserved its original architectural characteristics and retained the elegant Liberty style of that era.

Tastefully furnished with antique period furniture and ornaments, the villa's elegance is further accentuated by precious decorations, paintings, and the presence of original vaulted ceilings. A spacious lodge features a dining table and chairs, offering an idyllic setting for "al fresco" dining, while divans beneath a pergola adorned with centuries-old wisteria provide a charming outdoor dining experience. A stone staircase leads to a private garden with a panoramic swimming pool with hydromassage, which allows guests to take in sweeping views of the surrounding vineyards and olive groves, extending all the way to the city of Volterra.

Accommodation

The villa, spanning 350 square meters, is spread across two floors. On the ground floor, you'll find a fully equipped kitchen with a small pantry, a dining room adorned with an elegant wood fireplace made of lava stone, complete with sofas and armchairs, and a satellite TV. Another spacious salon boasts frescoed ceilings, inviting divans and armchairs. There's also a dining room featuring a sizable crystal dining table and original bookcases. On this level there is an additional double bedroom with its own ensuite bathroom.

A stone staircase leads to the top floor, where a corridor provides access to two double bedrooms, one of which includes a charming canopy bed. Continuing down the corridor, you'll encounter two more bedrooms. In three of these bedrooms, an additional single bed can be added as needed. Two bathrooms are available on this floor, one of which offers a comfortable bathtub.

Returning to the ground floor, adjacent to the kitchen and living areas, you'll pass through two arched doorways that open to the garden, featuring a stone floor and originally serving as the cloister. In total, the villa can comfortably accommodate up to 13 guests(10 in dedicated bedrooms, with the possibility of adding 3 additional single beds).

Around Glicine

Villa Glicine’s location in the tiny village of Fabbrica makes it the perfect getaway, with a pool and privacy as well as a Pizzeria and grocery within easy strolling distance. The views over the Era river valley (Valdera) are breathtaking, reaching all the way to the city of Volterra.

Volterra is a short drive away, nestled amidst olive groves and vineyards, and boasts one of Italy’s best-preserved Roman theatres. Constructed during the Augustan period at the end of the first century BC by the affluent Caecina family, this theatre was discovered during archaeological excavations in the 1950s under the supervision of Enrico Fiumi.

Just a short 30-minute drive from Villa Glicine you’ll reach the town of Pontedera. Here, you can explore the Piaggio company’s headquarters, known for producing the iconic Vespa scooters, as well as the Castellani winery and the Amedei artisan chocolate factory.

A one-hour drive from Villa Glicine will lead you to Pisa or the beaches around Livorno. Livorno, a port city designed as an “ideal town” during the Renaissance, is considered one of the most modern cities in Tuscany, and the most populous after Florence and Prato. Notable attractions in Livorno include the Livorno Aquarium, the Museo Civico “Giovanni Fattori”, Museo di storia naturale del Mediterraneo with its botanical garden, and the Museo Mascagnano, which houses the works and memorabilia of the renowned composer Pietro Mascagni.

On the days you just want to relax, it's a pleasure to enjoy the panoramic swimming pool and conveniences of Villa Glicine.

Worth knowing

Many local administrations now charge a “Tourist Tax” for people staying in rented accommodation and these vary from town to town. The charges are generally per person per night with a maximum number of nights, usually around 5 but sometimes 7, beyond which they will not charge. The charges range between 50 cents to 3 euro. Children are sometimes included, sometimes not and these charges should be collected by the property owners.
